Military Surplus, Used Clothes Size Chart and Conversation Guide

The measurements given on this site for military surplus/used clothing are as NATO or “armpit-to-armpit” refer to the measurements of the garment and not the size it will fit. The best way to check if an item will fit is to measure a similar item you have that fits well and compare the measurements.

Most European and international military products are produced in metric sizes. Therefore, we will give you the NATO size for our military surplus clothes were possible or the armpit-to-armpit and other measurements when the NATO size is not possible. When we give the armpit-to-armpit on an item, it is measured directly at top of the side seam (armpit-to-armpit) laid flat, then the measurement is doubled, giving the circumference.

NATO measurement takes into account your height as well as your chest size in terms of jacket or parka, waist and inseam (inside leg) size in terms of trousers, it is represented in 8-digit number formats. It is in the form 6070/9500 for a jacket, for example. These set of numbers are presented in centimetre (cm). As a result, the 8 digits 6070/9500 (in this case the first set of 4 digits 6070 refers to your height 160cm to 170cm, the other 4 digits 9500 is the chest size in centimetre (that is 95cm to 100cm). Trousers sizing follow the same 8-digit pattern but, they measure your inseam (inside leg) and waist. Therefore, 7075/8085 digits will represent, for example 70 to 75cm is your inseam (inside leg) and 80 to 85cm is for your waist.

Before ordering military surplus jacket or trousers, therefore, it will be handy if you have got a note of your height, chest, waist and inseam (inside leg) in centimetre (cm) so you can choose the correct size. This needs to be measured over your underclothes, rather than over anything bulky that may distort the figures.

The reasoning behind this is that most of the surplus clothing products are made for particular height ranges so if you are very tall it would be no good if we sent you a product designed for somebody short, and of course, vice versa.
